Trailing Experience in Southern Africa
Together, in small groups of a maximum of six participants, you will expand your trailing skills in the South African wilderness. You will be accompanied by experts who will teach you the secrets of the flora and fauna of this fascinating region.
As a participant, you will learn from a renowned training provider who is passionate about providing first-class training. The focus is on creating a unique connection between people and nature while respecting wildlife in all its glory. All participants will get involved in the trailing process, spending up to 8 hours on the trail of an animal each day. Start your trailing adventure along the breathtaking wilderness and experience the beauty of nature first hand.
Arrival and orientation
You must either book a flight to Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit) or fly to Johannesburg and take a shuttle bus from there to Hoedspruit. At noon, a staff member will meet you at the airport and take you to the camp in Timbavati. This transfer is included in the price and takes about an hour.
Upon arrival at the camp, you will receive a warm welcome and an introduction.
You will then receive a briefing on the bush safety guidelines and the trails so that you are aware of all the rules and relevant aspects.
On the first afternoon, there will be an activity such as an introductory walk. Have your first experience of South African nature and build up your anticipation for the upcoming days.
On the last day of the course you will be transferred back to Eastgate Airport, from where you can continue your journey or return home. We are happy to assist you with your travel plans.
Content of the Trailing Experience
The first two days will cover the basic knowledge of tracking, followed by five days of real tracking, focusing on large wild animals such as elephants and lions. The group is divided into teams for tracking so that each participant is actively involved in the process.
The camp is located near a waterhole, where each morning your group will pick up the tracks of animals that have come to drink during the night and follow them to find the animal.
All activities are accompanied by two trackers, one of whom has a minimum qualification as a professional tracker according to Cybertracker standards.
Although the main focus is on tracking animals, you will also spend time during the eight days interpreting tracks and signs as well as the behaviour of the animals.
Enjoy the impressive nature and collect all the impressions of the different wild animals as you and your group roam the South African bush together.
Accommodation in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve
You will stay in an authentic, unfenced tented camp set along a seasonal riverbed, under magnificent Jackleberry trees. There is no electricity, no Wi-Fi and no mobile phone signal, so you can fully concentrate on the surroundings and experience the rhythm of the bush.
Each dome tent sleeps two participants. A mattress and pillow are provided, but you must bring your own sleeping bag.
The sanitary facilities are basic; there is a long-drop toilet and bush showers, which are located under a tree canopy overlooking the surrounding bush.
The communal area is around the campfire or in the kitchen where our cook prepares healthy meals on a gas cooker and open fire. These are then enjoyed together in the communal tent, which also provides space for relaxing, sharing and reading. You can also spend some of your free time here.
Leisure time in the South African wilderness
You will quickly get to know the other camp participants with whom you will spend the coming days in this fascinating environment.
You can make good use of your free time together. Given the strenuous course activities, which include excursions and long walks, you can use these moments to rest and let the freshly acquired impressions sink in.
