Research in Nature Conservation
The internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in various conservation projects in South Africa. From the fascinating underwater world to the coast and forest regions, you will explore various biodiversity hotspots.
Arrival in South Africa
Your journey begins with a flight to George, South Africa, either from Johannesburg or Cape Town. From there, you’ll need to organise your transfer to Plettenberg Bay, which takes approximately 35 minutes. As there is no public transport , we recommend hiring a car for flexibility during your free time. Alternatively, a transfer service can be arranged. Upon arrival, you'll be welcomed into a beautiful and remote setting, ideal for your upcoming adventure.
Tasks as an intern
As an intern, you will be involved in various research projects that support the conservation of South Africa’s unique ecosystems. Your tasks will include data collection in marine, coastal, river & estuaries, forest & fynbos areas, and urban areas as well as wildlife monitoring in those areas.
You will work with camera traps, identify plants, conduct water analyses, and actively participate in projects that raise conservation awareness in local communities.
Each week offers you a new focus, giving you the opportunity to delve deep into different areas of research and learn practical skills. The tasks are done on foot as well as with vehicles, boats, and kayaks - always focussing on data collection and research. Your time will be filled with many different tasks in different ecosystems.
Note: This project does not focus on the iconic flagship species such as the well-known Big 5.
Accommodation in South Africa
Your accommodation is situated in a small, picturesque residential area surrounded by the majestic Tsitsikamma National Park mountains. You will stay in a cosy wooden house equipped with a communal kitchen, living room, and a lovely veranda.
Rooms are shared, with a maximum of two people per room. Wi-Fi and all necessary amenities are provided, ensuring you are well cared for even in this remote region.
Leisure time and meals
In your free time, you can explore the numerous hiking trails surrounding the house or enjoy a relaxing day at the nearby beach. Meals are not included, but there are weekly shopping trips to the town where you can purchase necessary items. A small shop nearby also offers essentials, though it is somewhat pricier. The region includes a variety of recreational activities such as canoeing, swimming, and birdwatching.

The project site is located in the heart of Tsitsikamma National Park, part of the famous Garden Route National Park in South Africa. This region is known for its breathtaking natural scenery, characterised by dense forests, dramatic coastlines, and rich biodiversity. The project itself aims to preserve the region’s natural resources through applied research, education, and active involvement of local communities.
The diverse ecosystems – from coastal and river mouths to forests and urban conservation areas – provide an ideal setting for comprehensive conservation studies. Special attention is given to the birdlife and the unique Fynbos vegetation, which is found only in South Africa. As an intern, you will have the chance to play a frontline role in conserving these valuable ecosystems while gaining deep insights into the challenges and successes of conservation in South Africa.
