1. Maun
Maun is the fifth largest city in Botswana with just under 56,000 inhabitants and is located in the northern part of the country. Located on the south-eastern edge of the Okavango Basin, it is considered the most important starting point for safaris into the spectacular Okavango Delta. The city’s usual nickname is therefore also "Gate to the Okavango Delta".
During a stay in Maun, the small but fine cultural offer of the city can be enjoyed: A scenic flight by plane or helicopter, a city tour or a visit to local markets and shops enable guests to explore the charming little town and its surrounding region.
-
2. Makgadikgadi Salt Pans
Covering an area of about 16,000 km², the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans in Botswana are among the largest salt pans in the world. This area is the least populated region of Botswana and is home to the colony of meerkats. As the remains of a huge lake, the salt pans are located northeast of the Kalahari and southeast of the Okavango Delta.
Almost 5,000 km² of this rough, barren and dry area are protected by the Makgadikgadi National Park which was founded in 1992. While the pans themselves have a salty surface with only grass on their edges, the area in between is characterised by sand dunes, rocky islands and desert areas.
-
3. Khwai
The Khwai Concession is an approximately 1,800 km² area in the northeastern part of Botswana's Okavango Delta. Mopane forests, grass plains, river meadows and blooming lagoons dominate the idyllic landscape. The area goes back to local Khwai settlers and is now managed by the Khwai Development Trust.
Formerly a hunting area, it is today used solely for the protection of nature and biodiversity. The Khwai River runs through the area and is the largest water source for animals in the region. Elephants, lions, antelopes and other representatives of the African animal world can be found here many times.
Background about the Adventure Safari in Botswana
Botswana is one of Africa’s premier safari destinations, known for its vast, untouched landscapes and abundant wildlife. The country’s commitment to conservation ensures that nearly 40% of its land is protected, allowing nature to thrive with minimal human impact.
The Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a seasonal wetland that transforms into a lush oasis during the annual flood. Its intricate network of channels, lagoons, and islands supports a rich variety of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, hippos, and an astonishing array of bird species. Exploring the Delta by traditional mokoro canoe offers a peaceful and immersive way to experience this unique ecosystem.
In contrast, the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, remnants of an ancient super-lake, present an otherworldly landscape. These vast, shimmering flats appear lifeless at first glance, but after seasonal rains, they attract migrating zebra herds, flamingos, and predators following the movement of prey. Here, visitors can also meet habituated meerkats and walk with the San Bushmen, learning about their ancient survival skills.
The Khwai Private Reserve, bordering Moremi Game Reserve, is a wildlife-rich region known for its large elephant herds, frequent predator sightings, and diverse habitats ranging from floodplains to forests. Unlike national parks, private reserves allow for off-road game drives and night safaris, offering exceptional wildlife encounters.
With its stunning landscapes, rich biodiversity, and immersive cultural experiences, Botswana delivers an unparalleled safari experience that seamlessly blends adventure, conservation, and mindful travel.
